The Southern Regional Education Board is made of up school districts in 16 states including, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. It was an honor to learn that Jefferson County Schools in Alabama won the Outstanding LDC-MDC District Award from the Southern Regional Education Board for our school district’s implementation of the Literacy Design Collaborative and Mathematics Design Collaborative teaching frameworks. Our district was presented this award for making the most progress as a SREB school district at the Southern Regional Board’s College- and Career-Readiness Standards Networking Conference July 11 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Jefferson County Schools is comprised of 56 schools with over 36,000 students and 4,500 employees. With the leadership of Dr. Craig Pouncey, Jefferson County Schools has worked hard in order to ensure improved student achievement in math, literacy, and other disciplines through districtwide support. District leaders have played a key role in supporting teachers as they collaborate to spread the word and share the practices. Scheduling structured time for teachers to collaborate in planning LDC modules and MDC formative assessment lessons has been a hallmark of our district’s success, as has analyzing student work and data.
Dr. Pouncey states that, “Our district’s instructional coaches, principals and teachers have worked to blend the mission and vision of the district with the purpose of LDC and MDC in order to better prepare our graduates to meet the College and Career Readiness Standards that our public desires. This created a tidal wave of change in which the culture of learning improved as a result of teachers delivering rigorous and engaging instruction.”
The Southern Regional Education Board works with states and educators to improve public education at every level, from early childhood through postsecondary education. SREB’s College- and Career-Readiness Standards Networking Conference brings together educators to learn and improve classroom strategies with the Literacy Design Collaborative and the Mathematics Design Collaborative frameworks. LDC and MDC have re-energized thousands of teachers by creating a collaborative environment that builds teacher confidence and student learning. The 2016 conference, the fourth annual, was held in Louisville, Kentucky, July 11-13 with over 3,000 teachers and administrators in attendance.
